Questions for anyone who sells / has sold cars for a living

I am in the process of getting out of the Army. I have looked into many different career fields and one thing I think I would be good at is selling cars. Obviously I love cars ( or I probably wouldn't be on here) and I am definitely a people person. I can and will talk to anyone, I have the Army to thank for that skill.

I am curious as to what anyone who sells cars feels about it. Love it? Hate it? Wish it was different in some way? Also, what do you wish you had known before you started?

Also, anyone who has sold cars and quit, why did you quit? Would you go back to selling cars? Would you rather pound your own dick flat with a hammer than ever have to say "I am going to have to talk to my manager about that," again.

Thanks for any advice.

The way my dealership works is different than most so I don't think my experience will help you much. Good luck with whatever you do and thank you for your service.

Do you work at a Tesla dealership?

Thank you, for serving our country.

Commission based sales jobs are stressful, not that this emotion will be new to to you. Not knowing how much money you're going to have can make paying bills and living your life a bit difficult during slow months.

That being said, the results will probably depend more on your market than your dealership. The local economy is what's going to be "driving" your success, so to speak. Not that it's anything you considered when you joined-in - casually bringing up your military career will be a wonderful tool that will help you succeed. You've been in and around a class of vehicle that most of us will never experience, and that makes a great talking point in-and-of itself.

I managed IT services for a Ford place out in Pittsburgh. They had an ex-marine named Scott who cleaned up. He was a funny dude, but honestly - not all that bright. He didn't talk about having been in the Marines until he was asked about it - which was inevitable due to all of his armed-forces knick knacks at his desk.

I sold for Toyota and Chevy in 1998-2000. It was a blast and I loved every minute.

Toyota was way easier and paid better than Chevy. But cars were different then too.

Drawbacks? Slow commission checks, mini deals, lots of mini deals, spot selling to people that shouldn't be buying cars, their repos and pissing off the desk by constructing my own (profitable) deals made things difficult.

Don't expect to make a million, be honest, and sell the aftermarket stuff as much as you can.

When I retire I'd love to go at it again.
